Obituary For Thomas Dunion Whalen

Mr. Thomas Dunion Whalen, 83, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, September 21, 2014, at his home in Newark, CA with his family by his side.

Born September 9, 1931, in Dumbarton, Scotland, he was the son of Anne Dunion and Michael Whalen. Thomas spent the first 30 years of his life in Dumbarton, where he would meet the love of his life, Margaret Neeson Whalen, and go on to play professional football for Dumbarton F.C.

In 1961, he moved to San Francisco, CA with his wife and three children. He continued his professional football career with the San Francisco Scots. A hard-working, dedicated man, Thomas then spent over 10 years as a tool and die maker at Lenkurt, before settling at United Airlines where he worked as a machinist for 20 years.

Thomas lived a life defined by his generous, caring and compassionate spirit. He was always the first to offer his help – whether that was his time or his money, he never said “no” when someone needed a favor. Described by his family as understanding and a great listener, he was always willing to lend an ear and offer his advice.

He had the ability to light up any room with his dazzling smile and his ability to make those around him laugh. He was a fun-loving jokester who will be missed dearly by all his friends and family, but remembered forever for his warm and jovial nature.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Neeson Whalen, son Thomas, daughters Patricia and Caroline, grandchildren, Ryan, Chris, Sean, Erin, Laura, Julia, Erica and Mollie, and 7 great-grandchildren, as well as his sisters Mary McMillan, Helen Robb and Margaret Whalen in Scotland.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 24, from 9-11am followed by a Chapel Service at 11 a.m. at Fremont Memorial Chapel, 3723 Peralta Blvd. in Fremont, CA.

"It's the weirdest, strangest thing to comprehend losing a loved one. One second they are here and then they are gone. But... I will remember my grandpa for his love of kit kats, his Scottish roots, the fact that he came to America to play professional soccer, his wit and humor, his love for baseball hats, and that fact that he made my mom! She is awesome too! It was a blessing just to know him. Missing my grandpa today, but celebrating and cherishing the moments that we had together. They were pretty great."
