Obituary For Sebastian "Tony" Antonio Varela
Tony Varela, a resident of Fremont for 46 years, passed away at the age of 95 peacefully surrounded by a roomful of family, love and prayers. He adored his predeceased wife, Anna Varela. Tony and Anna were married for an amazing 60 years. They showed us all what a loving, committed marriage looks like. He will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, godfather, and friend.
Tony was born to Francisco and Blanca Varela in Granada Nicaragua. He left school at an early age to help his father with their coffee plantation. Tony and his father would rotate every 6 months to Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Upon immigrating to the United States at the age of 18, he started working as a freelance photographer in San Francisco. He soon found himself drafted by the US Army during the Korean War. His father offered him money so he could return to Nicaragua and avoid the war. Tony however, told his father he would stay and fight for our country and a better life. Tony served 2 years in the United States Army from 1951 – 1953. During his time in the war, he achieved the ranking of Corporal and received 2 medals and 1 badge. As a Korean War Veteran, Tony will be honored at his burial for his service. When he returned to the United States, Tony worked for 2 companies as a machinist cutter: International Manufacturing Co. and later J. Marie Martin Table Pad Co. until he retired at age 65.
Many interests Tony enjoyed were painting, coin collecting, astronomy, traveling, watching boxing, gardening but above all he enjoyed making beautiful memories with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Tony is survived by his devoted daughter Annette Tomick, son-in-law Carl and granddaughters Cambria and Alina. He is also survived by his son Antonio Varela, daughter-in-law Martha and step grandson Enrique and 3 step great grandchildren. Tony’s generous loving spirit will be missed by all who knew him. We love you so much Papa/Abuelito.
