Obituary For Mark Henry "Hank" Miller
Mark Miller passed away at Stanford Hospital on May 20 after experiencing a massive stroke two days earlier.
A native of Tacoma, Washington, Mark was a 1970 graduate of Newark High School and the University of California at Berkeley in 1974. After a 31-year career in politics in Washington D.C., Mark returned to Newark in 2005.
Mark was the son of Richard and Lois Miller of Newark. He attended Musick Elementary School and Silva Middle School in Newark and Newark High School, where he was a member of the varsity soccer team.
During his high school and college years, Mark was a staff member of the City of Newark?s Parks and Recreation Department.
Upon graduation from U.C. Berkeley with a degree in Political Science, Mark went to Washington D.C. to work for local Congressman Don Edwards. Mark rose to a senior staff position for the Congressman and ran several of his re-election campaigns.
Mark subsequently served for several years as Chief of Staff for Congressman Bob Carr of Michigan, who chaired the Transportation Appropriations Sub-Committee of the House of Representatives. There Mark was a significant contributor to several major pieces of legislation. He also ran several of the Congressman?s re-election campaigns.
In 1995, Mark became a lobbyist specializing in transportation issues and represented several cities, counties, and industry organizations.
In 2005, Mark returned to Newark and continued to serve as an advisor to several of his clients in a semi-retired capacity, making several trips a year back to Washington.
In addition to his twin brother David, Mark is survived by his mother Lois and sister Donna, all of Newark, brother Alan, his wife Diane of Cupertino, and sister Joyce Taigen, husband Tim and their daughter Lauren of Penn Valley. He was preceded in death by his father Richard and sister Judith Tallman.
Mark will be sorely missed by his family and many friends.
Memorial donations can be made, in Mark?s name, to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 38801 Blacow Road, Fremont, CA 94536.
A private Memorial Service was held at his home for family and close friends.
