Maria Rosa Moreira passed away in her Fremont home on Sunday, November 1, 2026 at the age of 82.

Born on August 30, 1944 on the island of São Jorge, Portugal, Maria was the eldest of 4 children to Rosa and Joaquim Camara. She married João Moreira in December of 1962 and had 4 children before immigrating to the town of Niles in Fremont, CA in October of 1969. She gave birth to her remaining 2 children by 1982.

Maria was a devout Catholic with a strong love of the Holy Ghost and Our Lady of Fatima. Year after year, she volunteered many hours assisting local Holy Ghost societies and the Sociedade Filarmónica Recreio do Emigrante Português of Newark. Maria was known in her community of Niles to frequently give food, sweets and even plants and flowers from her garden to her neighbors.

Maria’s most prized possessions were her 12 grandchildren and her 7 great-grandchildren. There was nothing in the world that could make her smile larger.

Maria is predeceased by her husband, João. She is survived by her children Grace Silva (Joe) of Kimberly, ID; Lilia Carreiro (Marcelino) of San Francisco, CA; Paul Moreira of Fremont, CA; Maria Gaspar (Tomas) of Manteca, CA; John Moreira (Carla) of San Leandro, CA; and Lisa Melo (Rui) of San Leandro, CA. She is also survived by her grandchildren (and great-grandchildren): Mario (married to Patricia; children: Tazriel, Tavinna, Tommy), Daniel, Michael, Jeremy (married to Eryka; children: Landon, Brexlee), Carlos, Anthony (children: Carson, Emilia), Dominic, Sebastian, Jacob, João-Carlos, Josh and Jocelyn.
