Obituary For Joseph Wilfred Theriault

Joe passed away peacefully with his family by his side, after a valiant three month fight. Joe?s determination and hard work to regain independence after a stroke truly underscores his life long work ethic to do his very best in everything he encountered.

Joe was born in Lawrence, MA, to Albert and Ida (Houde). After graduation from Central Catholic High School, he entered the seminary, but quickly determined that it was not the life style for him.

After U.S. Coast Guard and Army service, Joe joined the Merchant Marines. On his first trip under the Golden Gate Bridge, he vowed that he would come back and make it his home. He then began a long career at the beginning of the computer age and retired from AT&T. Too young to stay home he began volunteering at Holy Spirit Parish and was soon asked to join the staff. Joe remained active at Holy Spirit and served as an usher until his illness.

Golf, dancing, travel, reading, music and his granddaughters were the passions of his life.

Joe is survived by his wife of almost 43 years Ingrid; his children: Joe Jr., Renee (Michael), and Nancy; his granddaughters: Jade, Kaya, and Jourdan; his siblings: Arthur, Robert (Martha), Norman (Tonia), Lee, and Agnes; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and his brothers Albert and Richard.

His family is sincerely grateful for the ICU and hospice room nurses of Washington Hospital. Their compassion and care to Joe and family gave great comfort.

Vigil Service will be held on Sunday, June 2, 4pm at Fremont Chapel of the Roses, 1940 Peralta Blvd., Fremont, CA 94536. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 3, 11am at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 37588 Fremont Blvd., Fremont, CA 94536.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Joe was a favorite of mine. I have good memories of our days in the Holy Spirit Men's club. Joe was a real asset to his church, and a man of character with a great sense of humor. Rest with the angels Joe. (We will be out of town and unable to attend services for Joe.) Hank & Marlene
