Obituary For Harvey Gene Kooy

Harvey Gene Kooy, of Fremont, passed away on May 17, 2026 at the age of 90 years old.

He graduated from Manteca High school in 1954 where he played football and basketball. He was an Army Veteran Paratrooper in the 505 Panthers for 2 years Fort Bragg, then served in the Army Reserves for 8 years.

Harvey spent 30 dedicated years at the Oakland Tribune as a proud member of the Teamsters Union and an active participant in the Oakland Tribune Go Getters Club. A passionate sports enthusiast, he could strike up a great conversation about any game. Harvey didn’t just watch sports—he lived them. He was an avid bowler, pitched softball well into his eighties on the over-60 league, and served as president of his horseshoe club, even winning a world championship in his age group in 2011. He and his wife shared a deep love for travel, exploring every corner of the world a cruise ship could take them.

Preceded in death by his parents Nick and Hendrieka Kooy, sisters Elizebeth Courtway and Dine Pederson, brother Clarence Kooy, and wife Patricia Kooy. He is survived by his 4 children, Sonya Tompkins, Darrell Kooy, Nick Kooy, and Jill Graham. Also survived by 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Harvey truly loved life, and his kind, generous spirit made him beloved by everyone who knew him.
