Obituary For Guillermo “Willie” Perono Ayupan

Guillermo “Willie” Perono Ayupan, passed away at the age of 90 on December 26, 2022. He was born & raised in Buting, Pasig Rizal. He was the third of five children, born to Ruperto & Carmen Ayupan. His siblings are Ricardo, Efie, Betty & Clarie.

Willie attended primary school in Buting, then went to Pasig Elementary School. He graduated from Rizal High School and then went to Philippine College of Arts & trade (PCAT), where he completed his teaching credentials. He taught in the Paranaque School District for a year and then moved to the Manila schools for 10 years. He started taking night classes for civil engineering at National University in Manila, but due to his expiring visa to the US, he was not able to complete his courses.

When he arrived here in California, he lived with relatives in Livermore, then moved to San Francisco. He started working in the shipping industry in which he continued to be a part of for the next 25 years, including starting his own company. His retirement in 1990 allowed him to spend more time with his family.

He was very active in the community of faith serving as a eucharist minister at St. Anne Church. He was one of founding members to charter St. Anne Council 8627 while he also served as a Grand Knight Council #8627 in 1994. He was the First Faithful Navigator of San Lorenzo Ruiz Assembly #2627. He was a member of the Lions Club International & in charge of shipping their donations of ambulances to their sister cities - Pasay City and Cebu City. He was also a very active member of the FilAm Council of Union City.

Willie is outgoing, kind, generous and friendly. He greeted everyone with a smile and had an infectious laugh. In the community, he was called the “Godfather” or “General.” He loved singing “My Way” by Frank Sinatra and his favorite ice cream flavor was Jamoca from Baskin Robbins.

Willie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Normita “Norma”, sister Betty, sons Gerry and Giles, daughter-in-law Joanne, and grandchildren Joseph, Ava and Logan.
