Obituary For Gerald Temple

Gerald Temple was born in Ft. Worth, Texas, on September 4, 1940 to Sylvester Temple and Laura Nell Casey. He was the oldest of 7 children. He has two siblings who preceded him in death: Lawrence Temple of San Francisco, California and Vester Ruth Hilton of Salt Lake City, Utah.

His remaining siblings are Paul Temple of San Francisco, California; Michael Butler of San Francisco, California; Ora Penn of Frisco, Texas; and Nelsena Butler of Oakland. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Tracie Temple, Cherney Jackson, Warren Goodspeed, Devine Garrett, Gregory Garrett, Everett Penn, Vernon Temple and Theodore Penn.

The family moved from Texas to San Francisco, California, when Gerald was very young. He entered the Army in 1960 and was honorably discharged in 1963. He married Jacquelyn Robinson in 1965 and had one child, Celeste Temple of Mt. View, California. They divorced in 1995.

He earned a BS in Electronic Engineering from San Francisco State. He worked at University of California, San Francisco Hospital in the Educational Television Department. He entered the apprenticeship program at Mare Island Naval Shipyard and then at Hunter’s Point Shipyard. After earning his BS, he left UCSF and went to NASA AMES RESERCH CENTER in Mt. View, California.

He married Candace Marie King in 2000 and they remained married until his death.

After he retired from NASA in 2006, he worked as an independent contractor including one position where he worked for one of the former students that he mentored. He also joined a group of engineers who are working on developing an earthquake forecasting system. Gerald was an avid pool and chess player and will be missed by his family, friends and the many people he has helped throughout his life. Several of them credit him with setting them on the right path in life and they are eternally grateful for everything that he has done for them. He will truly be missed.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 14, 12pm with a Funeral Service to begin at 2pm at Fremont Memorial Chapel, 3723 Peralta Blvd., Fremont, CA 94536. The burial will take place at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella on Monday, October 17 at 2pm.
