Obituary For David J. Leyva

David J. Leyva, son, father, husband, brother, son-in-law, cousin and friend, was most commonly and affectionately known as “Chief.”

David was born on August 30, 1973 in Guadalajara, Mexico to parents J. Felix and Teresa Leyva. Sadly, on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, David passed away peacefully in his sleep. David is survived by his wife, Nicole Leyva of 16 years and father to three children Desiree, Gabriel and Ariana. David had a vivacious, bigger than life personality. He would fill the room with his presence both in size and loudness. He had the ability to command attention and respect from the entire room but with a teddy bear sweetness. Everyone that was lucky enough to be part of David’s life always felt his love, happiness and zest for life. His hugs were amazing and always welcoming. His love had no bounds and he always brought joy to all events. Birthday, holidays, family dinners, beach getaways, any and all life’s events were more fun with David there.

David was very athletic as he grew up. His childhood friends have endless stories of playing outside and being rambunctious. David had a true love for all sports, especially baseball and football, starting from a young age. His love and support for sports continued by actively coaching in the community and personally encouraging and coaching his own children.

David’s work ethic was amazing. He was a true leader at heart, with the ability to take charge and manage the most difficult teams. He showed leadership and lived life through the motto “lead by example.”

David will be deeply missed by loved ones, family, friends, coworkers and anyone else lucky enough to have met him.

My first time meeting David was very impressive. I was the last to meet him before he was hired at OBE. At the time we were looking deep for drivers. He came to my office and shook my hand, I believe I teared up because the man had a very confident an d gripping hand shake. He was not trying to hurt me but I think he was checking me out. I tried not to show it but. Our conversation was based on strengths, then came the interview. We just talked about each other and the rest is history. GOOD MAN!. Jeffrey Williams

One time working for Starbucks in Lake Tahoe, I had a Business review meeting with my district manager. We sat in the lobby sipping on some coffee and discussing profit & loss reports, along with other measures of the stores performance. Everything was going just fine, when all of a sudden I hear from behind me, a man with a deep voice yelling, “I WANNA SPEAK TO YOUR MANAGER! RIGHT NOW!”. “Oh no!”, I thought to myself putting my face in my palm. My staff had surely pissed someone off. I turned around to address the issue and it was Chief! He let out his loud contagious laugh and said, “What up NAAPS!”. He sat with us as he waited for his coffee, meeting my boss and sharing few more laughs before taking off to finish his delivery, then driving back to the Bay Area. I had been away from Newark for about 7 years it was about 224miles away a 4hr drive, Chief was the last person I was expecting it to be. Anytime he was around there was sure to be good times and plenty of laughter. Chief will be missed by many!
