Obituary For Alan Joseph Roth

Alan Joseph Roth, 74, of Danville, California passed away at home on October 20, 2023 after a five-month battle with cancer. He will be remembered for his brilliant mind, kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion to family and friends.

Alan was born to John and Marie Roth in Modesto, California. From an early age he showed great talent for math, and after graduating from Bellarmine College Preparatory in 1967, he went on to study Electrical Engineering at California Polytechnic State University. At Cal Poly he joined Delta Sigma Phi where many good times were had, and lifelong friendships forged.

Alan enjoyed a successful and fulfilling career as an electrical engineer working for Dow Chemical Company from 1975 thru 1995 and Calpine Corporation from 1995 until 2014. Alan continued to do consulting work after leaving Calpine.

Outside of work, Alan pursued many hobbies including metalworking, woodworking, skiing, and aviation. One of Alan’s favorite places was his cabin in Truckee, CA where he hosted friends and family for countless ski trips. He could often be found tinkering in his garage or helping friends with a project. Alan loved to ride his bike with friends. In his 30s he became a recreational pilot and spent the following decades flying all over the Western United States, Michigan, and a special trip in 2017 to the Caribbean. Alan also volunteered to fly dogs destined for euthanasia at crowded animal shelters to other rescue facilities.

Alan is survived by his sister Kathleen and niece Julia, along with many beloved cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 8th at 10:30am at Holy Spirit Church, 37588 Fremont Blvd. Fremont, CA 94536 immediately followed by a celebration of life and reception at Fremont Memorial Chapel, 3723 Peralta Blvd. Fremont, CA 94536

Alan loved many dogs throughout his life, especially his dalmatians Conrad, Elizabeth, Winston and Tricia. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations may be made to Contra Costa Humane Society (www.cchumane.org).

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the medical staff, hospice workers, and caregivers who blessed Alan with their dedication, compassion, and kindness in his final weeks.

Alan was my boss and mentor for a number of years at Dow Chemical. He was tough but always fair. I just heard of his passing and I'm sorry I was not able to attend his service. I still think of him with his "T" shirts and a can of Diet Pepsi in hand, even in the middle of winter, as he walked into the control room each work day for our morning meetings. The man had an incredible memory and it always amazed me. Miss you Alan Pete Davies

Many of his friends from Calpine were texting stories about Alan. We texted about the days at DOW and all the Power Plants we built together. Alan was usually the quiet and smartest guy in the room. He was a good and dear friend. We flew a lot together. Miss him much. Bryan Bertacchi

I went to Holy Spirit school with Alan where were part of a terrific group of friends who had so much fun together. I saw him when he was at Bellarmine. He also served as an altar "man" at my wedding in 1970. Only very fond memories of him. Judi Mento Alonzo

I will really miss seeing Alan around. He was fun to talk to and he sure did love dogs. Whenever he came over he always had some treats in his pockets for my dog, Rudy. Like all dogs, he really liked Alan (even without the treats). I hope there are planes, Nascar races, Dalmatians, and Miatas in heaven. Miss you, Alan. ~Michelle (Trosclair) Goode
